Hotels late sept (21-28)

We are looking at a trip to upstate Main in late Sept. We like to be flexiple as we drive, stay a little longer if we find an area of interest, keep driving if nothing excites us, etc, and realize we are a little bit a head of the peak fall season (I think), but do you have to have hotel reservations prior or can you find places as you drive?

Late September is a popular time here in Maine. Although places are busier, most are not sold out so you probably don%26#39;t need reservations, but you may not always find your first choice of accommodations.
