Was planning to do this a few years back and actually posted but things fell through. This time things are a go and I need some help/suggestions/advice. Be warned this is a bit of a long post.
Was searching for lodging and came across the following: www.crabtreeneck.com Actually found them on vrbo.com. We will be arriving Sat Sept 5th and staying for a week. Seeing as husband does not fly we will be driving from NW New Jersey. Husband realizes the distance (that is what stopped us last time) and this was his suggestion so I jumped all over it.
Anyway coming from NW Jersey I need suggestions of one or two places to stop to see things along the way. Nothing that takes to long as we like to get to Main in a reasonable amount of time. Even if it is just one place to see a few things and eat a good lunch (nothing touristy or chain).
Seeing as the cottage is located in Hancock I am wondering what is there to do in the areas. Acadia National Park is on the list and I do realize its at least a 45 min drive to get there and that is fine. Any other suggestions for activities - boat tours, historic sites, etc.
Also suggestions for restaurants in and around the area for those times we do not want to cook...prefer casual. That reminds, a suggestion for a grocery store around Hancock will be good. The basics will be brought up with us - cereal, snacks, etc but anything that needs to be refrigerated (ie milk) I will buy up there.
TIA.

Coming to Maine on Sept 5th for the first time...
Just a couple of quick thoughts for you....
When you consider Acadia, don%26#39;t overlook the Schoodic Point section of the park....not as developed, or visited, but closer to you than the main park itself....I%26#39;d actually plan on two day trips -- one to the main park near Bar Harbor, and another at Schoodic.
Nearest good-sized grocery store to Hancock is probably going to be in Ellsworth...if memory serves, there%26#39;s a Hannaford in a shopping center on your right as you head toward Bar Harbor and US 1 for points further east (like Hancock). Hancock itself may have a mom-and-pop store but isn%26#39;t big enough to have much of any size.
For a truly memorable meal while you%26#39;re here, check out Le Domain Inn and Restaurant in Hancock. Their website is: http://www.ledomaine.com/
A bit on the upscale side perhaps -- but a really memorable evening you%26#39;ll talk about for a long, long time. I%26#39;d at least stop by and check it out after you get here.
For memorable things to do on your way -- if you have just a little extra time, I%26#39;d get off I-95 in Augusta and take Maine Route 3 to Belfast, where it joins US 1 and they continue together to Ellsworth. That will take you past Fort Knox State Park and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory -- a 360-degree enclosed observation deck built into the top of one fo the two bridge support towers. You%26#39;ll see the bridge ahead on Route 1 just south of Bucksport....take the left onto Maine Route 173 just before you cross the bridge....the entrance to the State Park and Observatory is just a mile or so on your right. Very nominal entrance fee and a quick elevator ride to the views of a lifetime!
