What%26#39;s to stop and see traveling from Bangor
To Bar Harbor.
from Bangor to Bar
Not much. It%26#39;s only an hour%26#39;s drive. You could stop at the L.L. Bean outlet in Ellsworth. There%26#39;s a small zoo between Ellsworth and Bar Harbor. Once on Mount Desert Island, you could drive through Acadia National Park before you drive into the village of Bar Harbor. You could take a slightly longer route than the usual from Bangor to Bar Harbor and see the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.
from Bangor to Bar
Would concur -- it%26#39;s not the most interesting drive in the world....but the destination is worth it.
Would suggest, after you get onto Mt Desert Island that you stop at the Acadia National Park Visitor%26#39;s Center.... good chance to pick up some great info on things to do during the rest of your stay....
If you want to check out the Penobscot Narrows Observatory (google it for more info), take Rt 1A south out of Bangor....watch for signs for Ft Knox State Park (or if you miss those, look for US Rt 1 north toward Bucksport). After you leave the observatory, it%26#39;s US 1 north to Ellsworth and Maine Rt 3 to Bar Harbor.
The Observatory is a recommended diversion. From there on your way to Bar Harbor and if you are interested in antiques and old books, the Chicken Barn is on Route 1 in Ellsworth. You can have lunch or dinner at Cleonice (Mediterranean) on Maine Street. Local information is available at the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce on High Street and the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce and Thompson Island Information Center (for Park passes) on the Bar Harbor Road (Route 3). Have a nice time and enjoy the commute.
oops...Cleonice is on Main Street in Ellsworth.
You could do taste tests of lobster rolls!
